Health Dangers of a Dachshund
Having a sick and physically fading dog is very difficult. Watching a pet suffer is watching a family member suffer. Some dog breeds can have issues more than other breeds. One of the breeds susceptible to great bodily injury is Dachshund.
The first and most of the health dangers to a Dachshund is the spine. Teaching them not to jump on furniture and giving them ramp access will help in keeping this type of problem at bay. A spinal injury must be assessed by a medical professional specializing in animals. Your veterinarian will be able to give you an idea of how severe the suffering may be an what can be done for your four-legged best buddy. Medication and surgery may be required. If you are planning to get a Dachshund, we strongly recommend pet insurance.
Dachshunds can have skin conditions, as well. Dry itchy skin and hot spots are common. These can be treated with medication from the vet’s office. A shampoo made for the Dachshund breed is available in pet stores. Hot spots should be treated with medications prescribed or recommended by your vet.
They can also suffer from a variety of eye conditions. Two rows of eyelashes or inward facing eyelashes are most common. These must be assessed and treated by a vet.
It has been scientifically proven over and over again that pet family members make us better when we are sick. They cuddle with us when we are alone, kiss us on command, and love us unconditionally and without expectation of anything in return. You need to be prepared to do the same for them when they are ill or injured.
