Rescuing A Dachshund
Dachshunds can be all about the attitude. Some people can not handle all that chutzpah! This means that these bigger than life dogs can end up in rescues and shelters. Often, the older they get, the more intolerance they can show. It is not intentional – they are dogs. They have hearts full of love, but it is not their’s to reason. Instinct takes over and if in pain, they can become aggressive. Dachshunds cannot talk, so reading the signs is critical. A chronically ill or injured dog can result in the dog being surrendered. Keeping them healthy and safe can aid in decreasing the number of dogs relinquished.
Take your dog for regular shots and check-ups. If you see signals of aggression, sleeplessness, trouble walking, excessive weight gain, intestinal pain, take your baby to the vet. Often weight loss and minimal treatment can fix the problems.
Dachshunds are actually very healthy and hearty dogs. However, there size alone can be an issue. The smaller they are, the more danger they face, physiologically and physically. Dachshunds are small in stature and when exposed to any extreme, it can have an extreme effect on them, and faster. Poisonous plants, animal attacks, falling yard furniture, etc….can have dire consequences for these dogs. It is impossible to watch a dog at all times, but making sure their living area is suited for them helps keep them healthy and safe.
If you have a Dachshund, you probably love a Dachshund. If you have one and have not made a love connection, it is OK.
This is not always a match made in the stars. If this is the case, please, contact your local Dachshund rescue. Avoid a kill shelter at all costs. Someone can and will love your dog. Do not be afraid you will be judged. Rescues and non-kill shelters are well-versed in this breed and know what it means to be overwhelmed by their needs. Simply type in “Dachshund rescue,” and your city or town into your search engine and you will get results. If you are looking for one of these amazing dogs, do the same.
